Los Angeles or New York?

Let’s say you’re having trouble making a decision as to where to start your professional acting career.  You know you need to be in a major city.  It’s down to just two choices:  Los Angeles or New York.  We’ll, the general rule is this–if you want to start your acting career out by doing a lot of theater, Broadway, Off-Broadway, musicals, etc., then New York is definitely the place you want to go.  New York is the home to some of the hottest and longest running plays and musicals such as The Phantom of the Opera, Cats, Les Miserables, Rent, Chicago, Miss Saigion and The Lion King to name a few.  Just think, if you get a job doing a Broadway play or musical, it may be steady work for years to come!  There’s nothing wrong with having a successful career in theater and if that’s what you want, “Start spreading the news..!”

On the other hand, if you want the glitz and glamour of seeing your face on the big screen or television–Los Angeles is the place.  In fact, Los Angeles (Hollywood) is the movie-making capital of the world as you may know.  Also, most of the popular television shows are produced in Los Angeles as well.  When it comes to soap operas, New York has Los Angeles beat.  Soaps like The Young and the Restless, General Hospital and The Bold and the Beautiful are produced in Los Angeles, while just about all the rest are produced in New York.  Bottom line:  If you’re trying to get that Oscar or Emmy–Los Angeles all the way.

Things to remember:  If you move to New York you won’t have to worry about having a car.  Utilizing the taxi or subway system is pretty standard for all.  If you have a car, get used to double parking as you may have a hard time finding a parking space.  In Los Angeles you MUST have a car and especially for auditions.  No one uses a cab there and the subway system is nothing compared to New York.

If you’re still in a small town, don’t worry about it.  Take your time, there’s no rush.  Plan wisely.  You can always hit both L.A. and New York up and see what you like best about both places.  Just know that if you’re serious about excelling in your career as a professional actor, you should end up in one of these two places.

Well, as long as you keep thing in proper perspective. Just make sure you continue to do good in school. Perhaps major in theater when you get to college? Be patient. If your destiny lies in Hollywood, you will come here.
