What is a Monologue?
Those of you who are new to acting may have heard of the term “monologue”. The correct Webster’s dictionary definition of a monologue is a “dramatic sketch performed by one actor”. The most important thing about having a monologue prepared is allowing people to see your talent. It’s also important to have because if you’re new to acting, your monologue is your calling card. Most agents and managers are looking for experienced actors with credits but may take on a newcomer who performs a monologue with outstanding dramatic performance. Having a good monologue prepared may be you ticket “in” for a good manager or agent to discover you. Of course a good referral to a manager or agent is ideal but that’s a different story. Having a monologue prepared also keeps your acting “chops” tuned up.
How Long Should Your Monologue Be?
A good monologue should be between 1 and 3 minutes long. It definitely should be short. Anything longer may bore some industry professionals not to mention many agents and managers (including casting agents) don’t have enough time on their hectic schedules to sit and hear your performance for too long.
Types Of Monologues
There are many different types of monologues to choose from. Comedic, Dramatic, Shakespearean, you name it. Remember, a monologue is simply a dramatic sketch of acting material performed by you. The monologue “piece” is usually a sole character speaking directly to an audience. Monologues can be snippets from a play or made up by you. The important thing is that your monologue shows your talent as an actor. Many actors choose many different character types from a monologue to best show their skills as an actor.
